US White House spokesman calls for 'free' elections in Egypt

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs has told reporters the US is calling for ''free and fair'' elections in Egypt as thousands of people flood the streets of Cairo, calling for President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

Mr Gibbs added the US has ''concern'' about the people of Egypt and said there must be ''an orderly transition'' of power.
