Barack Obama 'unable to express wild optimism'

President Barack Obama has said he hopes to reach a deal with Republicans on Friday to prevent a US government shutdown, but said he was "unable to express wild optimism".

The president expressed the importance of a budget agreement for the nation, saying "for us to go backwards because Washington couldn't get its act together, is unacceptable".
