Obama: 'Both sides had to give ground on important issues'

Democrats and Republicans in the United States have agreed a stopgap deal with the White House to avert a government shutdown.

News of the package which would keep the government running emerged with barely more than an hour to spare.

President Obama had earlier urged Republican and Democratic party leaders to strike an agreement to cut government spending.

He said both sides had to make tough decisions and give ground on important issues.
