Forty years of the US 'war on drugs'

America's battle to win the "war on drugs" has cost the country $1tn and has put hundreds of thousands of people behind bars since President Nixon declared the fight 40 years ago.

Liberals have long criticised the war but now conservatives in the US are also questioning whether the fight is worth it.
