Hurricane Irene is a 'large and dangerous' storm

Hurricane Irene remains a large and dangerous storm and should be taken seriously, US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has said.

The hurricane has made landfall on the east coast of the US, and more than two million people have been ordered to leave their homes.

Speaking during a news conference, Ms Napolitano said people must evacuate if they have been told to do so.
