Families welcome Fort Hood verdict

An American army psychiatrist has been sentenced to death for killing 13 people at a Texas army base in 2009.

Prosecutors said Nidal Hasan, a convert to Islam, wanted revenge for civilian deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq.

If appeals against the sentence fail, he could become the first US soldier to be executed in more than half a century.

Alistair Leithead reports.
