US tornadoes: 'Serious storm system' hits Midwest

Tornadoes have swept through the US Midwest, leaving widespread devastation in the states of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

Houses were ripped apart, sending debris flying through the air.

Patti Thompson, from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, said it was a "very serious storm system".

"We really need people to stay alert and take action quickly," she told BBC News.
