Passengers describe panic as Washington subway fills with smoke

A woman has died and 83 people have been hospitalised in Washington DC after a Metro tunnel filled with smoke.

Hundreds of people were forced to evacuate the L'Enfant Plaza station during Monday's afternoon rush hour. The source of the smoke was not immediately known.

Passengers described panic as smoke filled the train carriages leaving people struggling to breathe.
