Colorado gunman James Holmes sentenced to life in prison

A man who killed 12 people and wounded 70 others at a Colorado cinema has been spared the death penalty but will spend the rest of his life in prison.

James Holmes' attack took place during a late night screening of a Batman film in 2012.

The jury failed to reach a unanimous final sentencing verdict on the 24 counts, leaving the court to impose the life sentence without the possibility of parole.

The BBC's David Willis said that Holmes was "expressionless" as the verdict was read out.
