The media is 'critical' to democracy

Several major news organisations have been excluded from a press briefing at the White House.

The New York Times, CNN, the BBC and the Los Angeles Times and a number of other outlets were among those refused entry to an off-camera briefing with President Trump's spokesman, Sean Spicer.

Jeff Mason, president of the White House Correspondents Association, tells Radio 4's it is "damaging" when President Trump downplays the importance the media has in US democracy.
