Laura Ashley is continuing to defy the gloom on the High Street, reporting a big rise in sales.

The furniture and fashion retailer said like-for-like sales, which pull out the impact of new store openings, rose 5.4% in the 18 weeks to 2 June compared with the same time a year earlier.

The growth in sales was particularly strong at the company's website, which increased by 18.8%.

Laura Ashley said this was "partly attributed" to a revamp of the site.
