No-frills airline Easyjet and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) have been promoted to the FTSE 100 index.

The FTSE 100 is the index of the biggest firms listed in London although they are not necessarily British.

As a result of the regular quarterly review of the index, the mining company Kazakhmys and the shopping centre management company Intu Properties will leave the FTSE 100.

The changes will take effect from the start of trading on Monday 18 March.

Membership of the FTSE 100 may be good for a company's share price because some funds such as index trackers have to own all of the shares in the index.

It will be the first time that Easyjet has made it into the blue-chip index, while the LSE is returning after a nearly three-year absence.

Both companies have seen their share prices rise by more than 40% since the last index review three months ago.

Easyjet has been helped by rising passenger traffic while the LSE has benefited from growing trading volumes.
