(Close): US shares closed mixed on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones failing to break through the 17,000 level for the first time.

The Dow Jones edged up 20.17 points to 16,976.24 and the S&P 500 rose 1.30 points to 1,974.62. Both markets had closed at record highs on Tuesday.

For its part, the tech-heavy Nasdaq index fell 0.92 points to 4,457.73.

Payroll company ADP said businesses added 281,000 jobs last month, up from 179,000 in May.

Analysts suggested it could mean the government's monthly non-farm payrolls jobs report, due out on Thursday ahead of the 4 July holiday, might show an increase from May's rise of 217,000 jobs.

JPMorgan Chase fell 1% to $56.97 following the announcement that chief executive Jamie Dimon has throat cancer. Mr Dimon said the cancer is treatable, and that he would remain actively involved in managing the bank.

Elsewhere, Bank of America gained 1.6% to $15.85 following an analyst upgrade. Citigroup also rose 1.2% to $48.01.
