(Close): US stocks shrugged off concerns about political tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East and focused instead on strong corporate news.
US drug giant AbbVie finally clinched a deal to buy the UK pharmaceutical firm Shire for £32bn, while late on Thursday Google announced a big jump in revenue.
The Dow Jones closed up 123.37 points, or 0.7%, at 17,097.
The gains wiped out Thursday's losses, triggered by the Malaysia Airlines air crash in Ukraine.
