(Open): US stocks opened slightly higher as hopes of an easing in the Ukraine crisis offset news of US air strikes in Iraq.

Shortly after trading began the Dow Jones was up 6.54 points at 16,368 while the broader S&P 500 was 1.32 points higher at 1,910.89.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq index opened higher but then fell back to stand 2.31 points lower at 4,332.66.

Zynga shares fell 2.2% after the online games maker cut its outlook for 2014.

The company - whose games include Farmville - said 2014 bookings would be between $695m-$725m, compared with an earlier forecast of $770m-$810m.

Shares in McDonald's were down 0.2% after it said this year's global sales forecast was "at risk" after a food scare in China forced it to withdraw some products temporarily.
