(Close): US stocks held steady, despite falls across European markets early on with some positive US labour market data providing support.

A press conference by European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi disappointed some investors by the scale of support being offered.

The Dow Jones closed down 3.6 points at 16,801 while the S&P 500 was flat at 1,946.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 8 points at 4,430.

New figures showed the number of people claiming US unemployment benefits fell by 8,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 287,000.

The numbers came ahead of the closely-watched non-farm payroll figures which are due to be released on Friday.

Among individual stocks, Twitter rose 4% to $51.85 after JP Morgan raised its rating on the company's stock to "overweight" from "neutral".

Airline stocks posted a modest recovery after big falls on Wednesday following fears that the first diagnosed case of Ebola in the US could affect air travel.

Delta Air Lines was up 1% while Southwest Airlines was down very slight after an earlier rise of 1.9%.
