Banking shares lead FTSE 100 higher

(Close): London's leading shares gained ground on Monday, with miners leading the way.

The benchmark FTSE 100 index closed up 35.74 points, or 0.6%, at 6,563.65.

Miner Antofagasta was up 3.8%, with Fresnillo 3.5% higher and Anglo American rising 2.6%

Barclays also performed well, rising 3.4%, while Tesco enjoyed some respite from its recent troubles, rising 2.7% after appointing two non-executive directors to strengthen its boardroom.

The pound lost ground against the euro, down 0.2% to 1.2737 euros.

However, it gained 0.3% against the dollar, rising to $1.6015.
