US stock markets end Friday mixed after strong week

(Close): US markets ended Friday mixed, with the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indices closing lower and the Nasdaq slightly higher, ending an overall strong week.

The Dow Jones fell 141.38 points - or 0.79% - to 17,672.60, while the S&P 500 shed 11.33 points, or 0.55%, to 2,051.82.

The tech-focused Nasdaq index rose 7.48 points, or 0.16%, to 4,757.88.

General Electric, UPS, and McDonald's all reported weaker-than-expected earnings.

McDonald's reported a 7.3% decline in annual sales in 2014, sending its shares down 1.46% for the day.

Bucking the trend, Starbucks' shares rose 6.62% after the coffee chain reported like-for-like sales growth that was better than expected in its Americas division.

And cloud storage firm Box jumped over 65% in its first day trading as a public company, signaling that the demand amongst investors for technology public offerings is set to remain strong in 2015.
