Coldplay have been named songwriters of the year at The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (Ascap) Awards in London.

Their track Viva La Vida also scooped song of the year while Taio Cruz won the vanguard award for Departure.

Other winners included Scouting For Girls who won the college award for Everybody Wants to Be on TV.

The honours are for members of UK songwriters' body PRS for Music whose music is played in the US.

Coldplay, who are working on their next album with Brian Eno, accepted their award via video message.

That's Not My Name by The Ting Tings, Come Together by The Beatles and The Human League's Don't You Want Me were among song award winners.

Singer-songwriters Roger Greenaway and Imogen Heap performed at the event.
