Oscars 2017 pictures: The ceremony

The biggest story of the night came right at the end with the announcement that Moonlight had been awarded best picture.

The award was initially given to La La Land as the wrong envelope had been handed to Warren Beatty who was presenting the award.

Chaos ensued for a few moments before Jordan Horowitz of La La Land graciously announced it should have gone to Moonlight.

Order was restored as the cast and crew of Moonlight took to the stage to accept the award.

How did the mix-up happen?

Casey Affleck saw off strong opposition including Denzel Washington to win the best actor category. Affleck said: "It means so much to me thank you. One of the first people who taught me how to act was Denzel Washington and I just met him for the first time tonight."

La La Land took seven awards including one to Emma Stone for best actress. It's Stone's first Oscar win, although she was nominated for Birdman in 2015.

Mahershala Ali from the film Moonlight won the best supporting actor award.

Viola Davis won the best supporting actress award for her portrayal of Rose in the adaptation of August Wilson's play Fences.

The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Highlights from winners' speeches

Justin Timberlake began proceedings with a performance of his Oscar-nominated song Can't Stop The Feeling.

Host Jimmy Kimmel joked that the ceremony was being watched by "countries that now hate us".

Nasa mathematician Katherine Johnson (second left) appeared with Hidden Figures stars Janelle Monae, Taraji P Henson and Octavia Spencer. The film tells the little-known story of a group of African-American women and their contribution to the space race in the 50s and 60s.

Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson accepted Oscars for best make-up and hairstyling for the film Suicide Squad.

Colleen Atwood won her fourth Oscar, for the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, after winning in 2011 for Alice in Wonderland, in 2006 for Memoirs of a Geisha and in 2003 for Chicago.

Jimmy Kimmel spotted Meryl Streep and paid tribute to her "many uninspiring and overrated performances", to much laughter from the audience. Earlier in the week, designer Karl Lagerfeld accused Streep of rejecting one of his dresses because she found a different designer who was willing to pay her - he has since said he "misunderstood" the situation.

Just in case the audience needed a bite to eat, small parcels of sweets fell from the ceiling.

Producer Caroline Waterlow and director Ezra Edelman of OJ: Made in America accepted the award for best documentary feature.

Until this moment, Kevin O'Connell was the most-nominated person in Oscars history without a victory, with 21 nominations. Here he finally lifts the award - for best sound mixing for his work on Hacksaw Ridge.

Jimmy Kimmel organised for people taking an LA bus tour to unwittingly appear in the auditorium. Two of the guests told Kimmel they're getting married in December, so he got Denzel Washington to perform an impromptu ceremony in the front row of the auditorium.

Kimmel followed this by lifting actor Sunny Pawar, from Lion, above his head as music from the Lion King played - to the delight of co-star Dev Patel.

In a tribute to Back to the Future, Michael J Fox and Seth Rogen, along with a Delorean, appeared on stage.

British producer Joanna Natasegara and British director Orlando von Einsiedel accept the award for best documentary short for The White Helmets. It tells the story of the Syrian first responders who risk their lives to rescue victims from frequent airstrikes.

Actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, both nominated this year, took to the stage to introduce John Legend who performed his songs from La La Land.

Legend sang City of Stars and Audition (The Fools Who Dream).

The names of some of the actors, directors, writers, producers, musicians and artists who have died in the past year were flashed up on the screen as Sara Bareilles performed Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now.

Actress Salma Hayek and producer Joanna Natasegara navigated the stairs in the press room.

Amy Adams presented the Oscar for best adapted screenplay to Tarell Alvin McCraney and Barry Jenkins (not pictured) for the film Moonlight.
