If you like cycling, but can't be bothered with the hassle of owning your own bike, then a new system in Sheffield could be right up your street.

A cycle sharing scheme that works from your phone lets you "unlock" bikes from around the city.

Listen: Bid to revive Bradford's city centre nightlife

There are concerns not enough money is being invested to revive Bradford's city centre.

The city council is currently investing £75m to regenerate the area.

But some local business owners don't think this is enough and steps are being taken to set up a Business Improvement District in Bradford.

Ian Ward, the managing director of the Broadway Shopping Centre, says Bradford needs to offer more in terms of nightlife:

Beach warden to improve water quality in Scarborough

Scarborough is going to introduce a beach warden to improve the quality of water on the coast.

Sewage from seabirds, dogs, and even humans all have a negative impact on the North Yorkshire coastline.

The water quality in the Scarborough South Bay was officially rated as poor by the Environment Agency.

The warden will encourage people not to feed birds and stop them from allowing their dogs to foul on the beaches.

Trains across Yorkshire are mostly running on time this morning, with one or two small delays and a cancellation.

A TransPennine Express train from Cleethorpes to Manchester Airport has been cancelled. That train usually runs through Doncaster at 06:25 am and Sheffield at 07:08 am.

Unlike other days this week, there are no planned strikes today.

Crackdown on dangerous laser pens

The government's announced a crackdown on high-powered laser pointers entering the country.

Planes at Leeds Bradford Airport are among those who've been targeted by people shining the pens - which can cause blindness.

Ministers say that there will be more checks at borders including testing of the devices to make sure they are safe.

More than 150 incidents of eye injuries involving laser pointers have been reported since 2013 across the UK, mainly involving children.

The number of laser attacks on police aircraft was higher in Yorkshire than in any other part of the UK in 2015.

Public safety is of the utmost importance and we are working to increase the public's knowledge of the potential dangers associated with these devices."

Kyle Howarth returns to Sheffield Tigers

Sheffield Tigers speedway will be led into the new season by Kyle Howarth who's returning to Owlerton after a deal was struck with his parent club Workington.

The 23-year-old has now finally put pen to paper on a new deal and will become their number one rider and team captain.

This will be his third season with the club and Howarth said "It's great news for me to be back" and indicated that he didn't want to ride anywhere else.

The new campaign begins in March.

Leeds teenager arrested after 18-mile police chase

A teenager from Leeds has been arrested after a chase that left three police cars damaged.

Officers from Derbyshire began following a van on the M1 early this morning after boxes were stolen from two lorries parked at Leicester Forest East service station.

The van was between junctions 24 and 25 of the motorway when it failed to stop for officers. They pursued it for about 18 miles until it was stopped on the wrong side of the A38.

An 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, theft, dangerous driving, failing to stop and criminal damage to three police cars.

Search for youths after object thrown from railway bridge

Police in Bingley are looking for three youths after something was thrown onto railway power lines causing "loud bangs".

It happened just before Christmas on the Leonard Street bridge. Trains using the lines had to be stopped, causing long delays.

There were two loud bangs according to British Transport Police, they also say the stoppage in service will have cost train operators thousands of pounds

Three youths were seen running from the scene.

More jobs go at Asda

Asda has announced more redundancies today at its Leeds head office.

The supermarket has said that almost 30 of its property division staff will leave just days into new boss Roger Burnley's tenure.

It's the latest in a series of cost cutting measures for the supermarket chain in recent months. In September nearly 300 jobs went and further 800 staff had their job descriptions changed.

Mr Burnley, formerly Asda's chief operating officer and deputy CEO, took up the top job on 1 January after Sean Clarke stepped down.

What is 'Aussie' flu and should we be worried?

There are plenty of reports in Yorkshire's media today about the "Aussie flu" and that many places around our region have become so-called hotspots for the virus.

Every winter there are a few strains circulating and "Aussie" flu or H3N2 is just one of them. It is an influenza A virus that appears to cause more severe infections in young children and the elderly.

You can read lots more about it here, but these are the main symptoms:

Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include:

  • fever (temperature above 38C)
  • aches
  • tiredness or exhaustion
  • dry, chesty cough
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • tummy pain or diarrhoea
  • nausea and being sick

A baby born with a hole in her heart had to wait four months for a major operation to repair the defect, after the procedure was cancelled five times.

Leanne Smith, 20, said her daughter Evelyn Johnston-Smith was at risk of cardiac arrest as she waited for surgery at Leeds General Infirmary.

She said the wait had been "traumatic" but she did not blame the hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said the "difficult" decision to cancel the operation was "not taken lightly".

Police say at around 12:30 this afternoon a bus, a red Toyota and a silver Vauxhall were involved in a collision.

One car driver has been taken to hospital with back injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Leeds United forward banned for six matches for spitting

Leeds United forward Samu Saiz has been banned for six matches after being charged with spitting at an opponent in their FA Cup defeat by Newport County.

The 26-year-old was sent off by referee Mike Dean in injury time of Sunday's third-round tie at Rodney Parade.

The Spaniard, who can appeal against the suspension, has scored nine goals in 26 appearances for the Championship side this season.

As it stands he will be unavailable until Tuesday, 20 February.

South Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance service are currently attending an accident on Abbeydale Road in Sheffield.

The incident took place at the junction with Hale Street this lunchtime and involved two cars and a bus.

The driver of one of the vehicles has been taken to hospital with back injuries but they're not believed to be life-threatening.
