  1. Fairy light bomb plotter to be sentenced

    A man who planned to target a railway line with a homemade bomb using fairy lights and a pressure cooker is due to be sentenced today.

    Zahid Hussain, 29, was found guilty of preparing for an act of terrorism at Birmingham Crown Court in May.

    He was arrested in August 2015 after reports of a man carrying a hammer and behaving suspiciously near his home in Alum Rock, Birmingham.

    After being taken to a police station, officers found handwritten recipes for explosives, a modified fairy light and a hand-drawn map showing a drainage chamber.

  3. Rugby Premiership: Wasps thrashed at Saracens

    It was another tough day for Wasps yesterday as they were beaten 38-19 by Saracens, including a hat-trick for hooker Jamie George.

    The hosts went ahead when Chris Wyles collected Alex Goode's clever kick through before George burst through the Wasps defence for his first try.

    Dai Young's Wasps have now not won since 10 September, when they beat Worcester Warriors, and this loss follows defeats by Harlequins, Exeter and Bath.

  4. Temporary centre could replace closed sports facility

    A temporary gym and fitness studio could be set up in Kidsgrove to fill the gap left by the closure of the town's sports centre.

    The site closed after Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council said it couldn't afford to run the Staffordshire County Council-owned building.

    Borough councillors are now suggesting a temporary centre could be located in a school or college.

    The idea is to be referred to the council's cabinet for consideration.

  7. Church lightning repairs set to cost £30k

    Work is due to begin today at St Mary's Church in Bridgnorth to repair damage caused by lightning - it is expected to cost nearly £30,000.

  8. School closed by flood

    St Andrews School in Shifnal, Shropshire, has closed classes 1-4 because of a flood.

    Open as usual for classes 5 and up.

  9. Traffic officers to help Oldbury congestion

    Traffic officers are being drafted in to help tackle congestion on local roads for the first time because of delays caused by major roadworks on the M5.

    Work to repair the Oldbury viaduct in Sandwell is expected to last until August 2018, causing delays on the motorway and surrounding areas.

    Traffic officers, who usually only patrol motorways and trunk roads, will take to smaller streets.

    They'll be on hand to clear breakdowns and help traffic to flow faster.

  10. Pete Waterman's 'ghost' E-Type Jaguar to be sold

    A rare Jaguar E-Type, owned by music producer Pete Waterman, is expected to raise about £140,000 when it's sold at auction next month.

    The Series III 2+2-seater Jaguar E-Type has been owned by Waterman since the late 1980s and is so rare the car was referred to as a "ghost" as it was presumed lost for 30 years.

    Both the E-type and Waterman himself were born in Coventry.

    The Jaguar, never made available to the public, will go on sale at the Imperial War Museum Duxford on 15 November.

  12. Worcester's micro home takes in first resident

    A unique micro home, created to tackle homelessness, will welcome its first resident today in Worcester.

    The iKozie cost £40,000 to build and was built by The Homeless Foundation.

    The creator hopes it will help a homeless person transition from hostels to independent living.

  15. The end of bin strikes?

    It might not be the last of bin strikes in Birmingham.

    Last month the High Court granted an interim injunction against the council's bid to make workers redundant.

    That decision led the Unite union to halt strikes.

    A trial to determine if the council acted unlawfully in issuing redundancy notices will now take place in November.

  16. Birmingham bin strike: Crews resume collections

    Bin collections will start up again in Birmingham today after refuse workers suspended their three-month strike.

    The dispute over job losses meant bins overflowed and bags full of rubbish piled up in the streets.

    Birmingham City Council says crews are back out to begin clearing the backlog.

    Residents are being asked to separate household rubbish, recycling and garden waste as normal.
