  1. Man arrested on suspicion of bogus carjacking claim

    A man who claimed to have been carjacked at gunpoint has been arrested after officers found evidence he'd invented the story.

    West Midlands Police say it could have been an attempt to cover up a drink drive crash.

    Mobile phone footage was retrieved of the crash on Alum Rock Road after officers received reports the vehicle had been stolen by three men armed with a gun.

    The video showed people fleeing the collision, including a man who was a "dead ringer" for the man claiming to have been robbed, the force said.

    A 29-year-old man from Tyseley was arrested on suspicion drink driving and remains in police custody.

    • One of Wolverhampton’s longest-serving councillors has been granted special dispensation from attending committee meetings on the grounds of ill health, his colleagues have agreed.
  3. Video: Tom Watson MP stands down

    Labour's deputy leader has expressed his sadness at leaving politics.

    Tom Watson described serving the people of his constituency of West Bromwich East as "an honour".

    He says he will continue to campaign for the party and the decision was "personal, not political".

    Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn thanked Mr Watsonfor his service, adding: "This is not the end of our work together."

  4. German Christmas market returns for 20th year

    Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market is returning this morning for its 20th year.

    It will run until 23 December and as well as the food and gift stalls and the bars, there is an ice rink and big wheel in Centenary Square.

    The market will be open from 10:00 to 21:00 every day, apart from 10 November when it will be open from 13:00 to 21:00 as a mark of respect for Remembrance Sunday.

    West Midlands Police said officers would be on patrol, some of them in plain clothes, and warned shoppers to be aware of pickpockets.

  6. Man dies eight days after being hit by car

    A man who was struck by a car while crossing a road has died in hospital.

    Himley Road, Dudley

    Francis Wright suffered serious head injuries in the collision on 28 October on Himley Road, Dudley, West Midlands Police said.

    The 76-year-old, from Dudley, died in hospital yesterday morning.

    The force said the driver of the Kia Venga involved remained at the scene at the time and was co-operating fully with officers.

  7. Golf course closure plans comes to the fore

    Plans to close a golf course and turn it into a public park and a site for a new school and homes are going out for consultation this week.

    Sandwell Council says Brandhall Golf Course, Oldbury, costs £257,000 to run annually and needs £3m spending on it to upgrade to required standards.

    It also currently has 318 members, nearly two-thirds of whom live outside Sandwell, the authority adds.

    Six weeks of consultation on its future will start tomorrow with a decision expected in the new year.
