  4. Mast application for driverless car testing

    The testing of driverless cars on roads in the West Midlands looks set to move a step closer after planning applications were submitted for infrastructure to support the technology.

    The region won a national competition to become the UK’s first test bed for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs).

    Planning applications for two masts in Birmingham have been put forward by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), which is responsible for running the project.

    The devices would be located on land to the south west of the A38, Salford Circus, and on land immediately adjacent to Dartmouth Circus on the A38 Aston Expressway.

  5. Coronavirus tests for man after Wuhan visit

    Blood tests are being carried out to see whether a Birmingham resident has contracted the new coronavirus, Public Health England (PHE) has confirmed.

    PHE said the man, from Harbourne, had returned to the UK from Wuhan, China - the city at the epicentre of the outbreak - on 31 December. It added while that was more than 14 days ago, he was being tested because he had shown symptoms during the period.

    The man is awaiting his test results in hospital. They are expected in the next 48 hours, PHE says.

    So far, there are no confirmed UK cases.

    PHE advised anyone returning from Wuhan to self-isolate for 14 days, even if they weren't showing symptoms.

  7. Coronavirus: Britons in China want more support from UK

    A university lecturer from Birmingham who is in Wuhan, the centre of the Coronavirus alert, says the UK government isn't doing enough to help and inform Britons trapped there.

    UK citizens in Wuhan and surrounding areas said that while other countries prepared evacuations, they had been given little information.

    The US and Japan are sending planes to Wuhan for its citizens.

    Maeve Clarke, who has been in Wuhan for a month and was due to fly home yesterday, says the government "hasn't responded quickly enough".

    She said: "We still don't know exactly what the plans are."

    Downing Street says the Foreign Office is "urgently exploring options" for British nationals to leave the region.

    The new Bishop of Dudley will be ordained and consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury at a service at Southwark Cathedral in London today.

    Martin Gorick is a former chaplain to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.

    He will officially begin his ministry in the Diocese of Worcester next month.
