  3. Big win for threatened south Wiltshire archaeological dig

    "Dogged digging" at a site near Stonehenge has bagged the Research Project of the Year 2018 award.

    The archaeological excavation at Blick Mead uncovered an untouched 6,000-year-old encampment.

    The dig also revealed an "unprecedented array of evidence" for large Mesolithic gatherings and extravagant feasts taking place just over a mile from where Stonehenge would be built thousands of years later.

    Amesbury Museum tweeted that it was a "brilliant result for Amesbury tonight".

    In the next few months police in Cheddar, Somerset, are moving into a new station at Kings of Wessex Academy.

    Inspector Andy Pritchard said the current base at the old police station, on Cliff Street, "is too large for our needs".

  6. Bristol man guilty of estranged wife's 'brutal' murder

    A man has been convicted of "brutally" murdering his estranged wife at their family home.

    Adan Dahir, 38, stabbed mother-of-two Asiyah Harris, 27, three times at the property in Ludlow Close, Bristol, in August.

    The call he made to police following the stabbing has been released.

  7. M4 eastbound to close overnight

    Drivers planning to travel on the M4 near Bristol tonight are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys while emergency resurfacing work is carried out.

    The eastbound carriageway of the M4 between junction 20 and 19 will be closed from 10pm on Friday until 6am on Saturday.

    The slip road from the M5 northbound to the M4 eastbound and the M5 southbound to the M4 eastbound and westbound will also be affected.

    Drivers are advised to leave the motorway at junction 16 and follow the diversion.

  8. Army military exercise warning

    The Army is warning people in the Lyneham area that a military exercise is starting this evening and will last most of the weekend.

    The old RAF airfield is now an MOD training base for its engineers.

    From 6pm, a patrol training exercise will start which includes firing blank ammunition rounds.

    The exercise will last until noon on Sunday and the MOD says it plans to minimise disruption for people living nearby.

    Permission has been given for a new memorial for rock 'n' roller Eddie Cochran on the spot in Wiltshire where he died, its organiser has said.

    The 21-year-old American musician was killed in a car crash in Chippenham in April 1960, following a gig in Bristol.

    The singer was returning to London at the end of a UK tour when the taxi he was in span into a lamp post.

    Campaigners are now hoping to raise £2,500 for the new deign memorial plaque.

  10. Clean up operation to protect historic building's future

    Work is under way to remove rubbish, vegetation and other debris which has been dumped at one of Swindon's most historic buildings.

    The Locarno in Old Town was built in 1852 and has Grade II protected status from Historic England.

    But the buildings have fallen into decline since it stopped being used as a bingo hall in 1984.

    Some people in the town are hoping the clean up operation could finally mark the first step towards saving the structure.

  13. Beatrix Potter letters going under the hammer

    Handwritten letters from Beatrix Potter are being auctioned after they were discovered in a house near Warminster.

    The author wrote the notes to farming professor James Hanley in the 1940s.

    They're expected to sell for at least £10,000 in auction on Saturday.
