    Fire at disused building

    Firefighters have been tackling a derelict building fire in Neston, near Corsham in Wiltshire.

    The fire is thought to have affected an old factory on the outskirts of the village.

  2. World's rarest bird gets new home

    Madagascar pochard chicks

    The rarest bird in the world - a species of duck called the Madagascar pochard - has been given a new home in time for the new year.

    An international team of researchers, including conservationists from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge, released 21 of the birds at a lake in the north of Madagascar.

    It is a step towards the recovery of a species that just over a decade ago was thought to be extinct.

  3. Teenager assaulted in homophobic incident

    Police are investigating a homophobic hate crime on a footpath in Gloucestershire.

    A teenager was walking along Cam Pitch towards the Tesco store in Dursley, near Stroud, when he was attacked by a man at about 14:30 GMT on 14 December.

    Police said the man also made "a homophobic slur" towards the teenager.

    Officers described the man involved in the assault as white, in his 40s and wearing blue jeans and a grey long-sleeved zipped jumper.

    Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101.
