Mark Williamson

BBC Local Live

Restoration of painting
Hamilton Kerr Institute

The Adoration of the Shepherds by 16th Century Italian artist Sebastiano del Piombo was removed from a wooden panel with acid in the 1700s and then painted over.

Experts based at the Fitzwilliam Museum examined fragments of original paint smaller than a pinhead under a microscope, and compared them to a copy held by the Louvre in Paris, to complete the repair work.
