  1. New Eddie Cochran plaque given go ahead

    Permission has been given for a new memorial for rock 'n' roller Eddie Cochran on the spot in Wiltshire where he died, its organiser has said.

    The 21-year-old American musician was killed in a car crash in Chippenham in April 1960, following a gig in Bristol.

    The singer was returning to London at the end of a UK tour when the taxi he was in span into a lamp post.

    Campaigners are now hoping to raise £2,500 for the new deign memorial plaque.

  6. Police release image of car in fraud probe

    Detectives in Peterborough have released this image of a car they believe has been used by fraudsters posing as police officers.

    On one occasion a victim handed over £5,000 after he was threatened with arrest by a man pretending to be a police officer.

    He had been led to believe the police were investigating criminal activity on his bank card.

    The suspect is described as Asian, around 6ft to 6ft 6in (1.82m to 1.98m), with brown hair.

    Det Con Louise Mann said: "Your bank and the police will never ask you to withdraw cash, reveal your PIN number or passwords or purchase high value goods that they will then collect from your home."

  8. 'Massive turnout' for Cambridge University strikers

    Lecturers have walked out at universities across the UK - including Cambridge - at the beginning of a month-long strike campaign.

    Members of the University and College Union say they are striking because changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme will leave a typical lecturer almost £10,000 a year worse off in retirement.

    Striking research fellow and teaching associate Edward Anderson captured the atmosphere in the centre of Cambridge on Thursday morning as crowds gathered to show support.

    It was a "massive turnout" and "incredibly heartening and quite emotional to see such remarkable solidarity and support from our students," he said.

  9. Young illustrators showcase talents

    Students of Anglia Ruskin's renowned MA Children's Book Illustration course are showcasing their artwork at a special exhibition in Cambridge.

    The show features 83 graduates, many of whom have already signed up to book publishers.

    Among them is artist Viola Wang, winner of the Sebastian Walker Award for Illustration, set up in honour of the found of Walker Books.

    She said: "I want the children who read my books to experience a wide range of information and views, so that they will grow up with their own opinions about – and solutions for – the world around them."
