New road layout cuts traffic queues at hospital

Managers at Coventry's University Hospital say changes to the road layout at the site have reduced traffic congestion. 

The first phase of an improvement scheme, involving changes to car park entrances and a new bus interchange has been completed, along with work on nearby Clifford Bridge Road.

Work underway for new fire station

Work has started on a new fire station for Warwickshire at the Aston Martin site in Gaydon.

Costing more than £750,000 it will be home to one engine and 12 firefighters when completed in July.

Time extension granted in electoral fraud investigation

Warwickshire Police say they've been given more time to investigate allegations of electoral fraud from the 2015 general election. 

They're looking into improper campaign spending returns. 

It's one of eight similar investigations across the country and they've been granted a further 12 months to carry out their investigation.

County's 'breadth of offerings' wins place in travel guide

Shakespeare's 400th anniversary celebrations in Stratford-upon-Avon has boosted visitor numbers to Warwickshire according to travel guide Lonely Planet.

Editorial director Tom Hall said the county has so much more to offer.

"Whether travellers are seeking sublime scenery, historical market towns or perfect ruins, Warwickshire has them all," he said.

2016 has been such an important year with the county celebrating so many important events and anniversaries, not only Shakespeare’s 400th but also the 300th anniversary of Capability Brown and 750th anniversary of the Siege of Kenilworth Castle.

Driver describes 'dramatic' coach fire on M6

A coach driver says a bus carrying 59 schoolchildren and seven teachers took only ten minutes to be completely destroyed by fire.

Driver Paul Bingham, from Evesway Travel of Wigan, spotted flames coming from the vehicle on the M6 yesterday, and pulled over to help those on board.

"it was quite dramatic" he said, "within ten minutes the bus was destroyed".

He then transported the children to the National Motorcycle Museum, opposite the NEC, where parents were waiting. 

The ambulsance service commended Mr Bingham saying: "The Trust would like to pay tribute to the Eavesway Travel of Wigan coach driver who spotted the issue, stopped at the side of the motorway and helped evacuate the children".

Warwickshire only UK entry in Lonely Planet's 'top 10'

Warwickshire is the only UK destination to be named in Lonely Planet's top ten destinations in Europe to visit this summer.

The list also includes Peloponnese in Greece, Venice and The Dordogne and is compiled by Lonely Planet’s travel experts.

Controversial housing development goes before planners

Plans for 2,000 new homes at Lighthorne Heath and Gaydon in Warwickshire go before planners at Stratford District Council tonight. 

The scheme's being recommended for approval despite strong local opposition and businesses including Jaguar Land Rover.

A letter to the council from consultants representing JLR complains of lack of 'appropriate consultation' and voices concerns overs highways issues.

Coach driver's 'quick actions' helps rescue dozens of children

A coach driver, who helped 59 school children and seven teachers escape a burning coach on the M6 yesterday says all he did was let the stranded children "take refuge".

Paul Bingham was driving his 50-seat coach back to his firm's yard in Wigan when he pulled over after seeing "small flames coming out of the rear bottom" of a coach on the hard-shoulder.

"I did nothing really" he said "I just parked my bus and said jump on".

But, he admitted "I got 60-odd people away from the scene and allowed them to sit in comfort, I think the important thing is the kids didn't see it, that would have been more stressful".

The ambulance service say it could have been a much more serious incident "but for the quick actions of the coach drivers, teachers and children".

County Championship: Warwickshire v Durham day three

Council leader calls for bus lane review

Coventry City Council leader George Duggins has confirmed he would like to see a review of bus lanes in the city.

He says he believes some could be removed to increase traffic flow and improve air pollution.

"I know that it's been done in Liverpool" he told our Breakfast programme, "and we do need to look at them here".

He also highlighted figures showing air pollution kills more people than alcoholism and obesity in the city.

School pupils escape burning coach on M6

Fifty-nine schoolchildren and seven teachers escaped a coach that burst into flames on the M6 in Warwickshire yesterday.

Four 10-year-old girls were taken to hospital after the blaze broke out near Coleshill at about 15:40.

Thirteen children and the driver were treated for smoke inhalation, although none were not thought to be badly hurt. The group was from a school in the Black Country.

Travel: Accident on M6

There's slow traffic on the M6 northbound, after Corley Services, because of an earlier accident involving a car and a van.
