Tata considers bids for UK steel plants

Business Secretary Sajid Javid and Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones have travelled to Mumbai for a Tata board meeting to discuss bids for Port Talbot and its other UK steel operations.

The deadline for potential buyers to make formal bids closed on Monday.

Tata has declined to say how many actual bids it has received.

The firm employs just under 800 people across the West Midlands.

Up to 2,000 homes in South Warwickshire get the green light

Plans for up to 2,000 new homes, as well as a primary school, health centre and shops, for land around Gaydon and Lighthorne Heath - have been approved by planners in Stratford.

The controversial scheme - was recommended for approval -and was passed by a 5 to 1 majority by the district council.

Neighbours Jaguar Landrover had written a letter to the council saying it had concerns over the impact on their own expansion plans.

Tributes are being paid to former Sky Blues midfielder Ian Gibson who's died aged 73.

He played for the club between 1966-1970 and was an instrumental part of the squad that qualified for Europe during that time.

Aston Martin to take part in ring-road circuit

An Aston Martin Vulcan will take part in the ring road circuit at Coventry MotoFest 2016 in its first ever  appearance on a UK public road.

The £1.8m pound car joins a host of Gymkhana cars, drift cars and stock cars set to feature on two makeshift circuits running through the city during next month's event.

Researchers say governments across Europe must improve the way they gather and share information about firearms to help cut gun crime and tackle terrorism. 

Scientists from Coventry University believe the number of deaths and injuries caused by guns could be reduced - and they've presented their findings to the European Parliament in Brussels.

A Coventry father-of-two says he'll never use legal highs again - because of the effects they had on him.

Sales of legal highs become illegal from midnight - with traders facing 7 years in jail if they're found guilty of selling them.

"Alan" told Trish and Jo on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire's breakfast show - they're nothing like the cannabis he's used to.

Ian Gibson, the former Sky Blues midfielder who was a crucial part of the City's qualification for Europe in 1969-70 has died at the age of 73.

He played 93 games for Coventry and scored 13 goals.

He upset Jimmy Hill by turning up late to a couple of games so he dropped him and we went on a losing streak for about six games. The crowd were saying "bring back Gibbo" and he brought him back for a game against Huddersfield and we never lost another game for the rest of that season.

'Gaps in knowledge about gun crime'

A Coventry University report highlights gaps in knowledge about gun crime - and the missed opportunities to tackle the trade in lethal weapons across Europe.

It says inconsistencies in the way countries compile crime data mean it's not possible to determine the true number of firearms offences. 

The report is presented to the European Parliament today.

Another Warwickshire council votes to join the combined authority

North Warwickshire Borough Council has voted to join the West Midlands Combined Authority.

The move comes six months after the council voted not to join the body and just weeks after Warwickshire County Council agreed to become a member.

Both will now become non-constituent members of the WMCA meaning they can take part in policy discussions but have limited voting powers

Campaigners' disappointment after homes plan approved

A decision to approve plans for 2,000 homes around Gaydon and Lighthorne Heath in Warwickshire was made without all the information - according to a campaigner.

The scheme was approved last night.

Laura Steele, from the protest group FORSE (Friends of a Rural and Sustainable Environment), says the council didn't have a letter from Jaguar Land Rover about the scheme - as they discussed the proposals.

The letter, written by consultants Gerald Eve, states: "It is vitally important that any development proposals do not compromise our ability to expand and grow on both sides of the B4100/Banbury Road in the future".

Father welcomes legal highs sale ban

A Warwickshire man who set up a drugs charity after his son became addicted to legal highs says banning their sale can only be a good thing.

From midnight, shops that sell the psychoactive substances can be prosecuted with owners facing up to seven years in jail.

Richard Smith from Nuneaton founded a charity after his son became addicted to them. He says legislation hasn't been able to deal with legal highs until now.

Lanes blocked on motorways

There's a lane blocked on the M6 exit slip road southbound at J1, A426 (Rugby), because of a broken down lorry, BBC Travel News reports.  

There's also a lane closed on the M42 exit slip road northbound at J5, A41 (Solihull), because of a broken down vehicle.
