Record crowds took to Coventry's War Memorial park for the this year's Godiva Festival, with performances from The Stranglers, Example & DJ Wire and the Darkness across the weekend.

Abdul Khan, from the city council, said the festival had "once again shown that it continues to grow each year".

“Thank you to all those who played their part, including sponsors, partners and staff, to ensure Godiva Festival continues to be the UK’s biggest free family music festival," he said.

Laura McMillan, Coventry City of Culture Trust Manager, said: “Bidding for UK City of Culture, you have to show your city has the capacity to hold large scale events and with 179,000 visiting Godiva this year, Coventry has it covered.”

Rescue dog with mended heart to star in TV show

Remember Molly, the "broken-hearted" dog who had life-saving heart surgery?

Well she’s about to star in a TV show. The five-year-old terrier, who was rescued by the RSPCA in Coventry, was fitted with a pacemaker after vets discovered her heart wasn’t beating properly.

She’s now living with Amanda Hull, a foster carer in Coventry, who called her, “a sweetheart”.

Molly will star on The Dog Rescuers with Alan Davies on 11 July at 20:00.

The British pair sent down 18 aces and hit 26 winners as they outmuscled their opponents.

Willis became a Wimbledon favourite last year after winning six matches to qualify before losing to seven-time champion Roger Federer on Centre Court in the second round.

Youth arrested for carrying a knife at Godiva

A teenager's been charged with carrying a knife at the Godiva Festival, police say.

The 16-year-old was arrested on Saturday evening after several reports of someone carrying a weapon.

He was charged with possessing a blade in a public place and bailed to appear before Coventry Youth Court later this month.

Police crackdown on drivers using mobile phones

About 1,000 people have been stopped for using their phones while driving over the past six months, police in West Mercia and Warwickshire say.

They are running a week-long crackdown, targeting drivers who use their phones.

Earlier this year, the penalty for those caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving doubled from £100 to £200 and from three to six points.


We are urging people to think about the consequences of their actions and ask themselves how they would feel if they caused a collision and injured, or killed, somebody else simply for the sake of making a call, reading a text message or checking social media."

The Darkness light up the Godiva Festival

Coventry's three-day Godiva festival attracted record crowds, say the organisers.

Around 179,000 attended the event at the city's War Memorial Park this weekend.

Rock band, The Darkness headlined the festival, one of the UK's biggest free music events.

The Sky Blues will play Shrewsbury Town and Walsall when they begin their defence of the Checkatrade Trophy next season.

The three teams are in Group E of the Northern Section of the competition and will be joined by an under-21 team from either a Premier League or Championship club.

But we'll have to wait until Wednesday next week to find out who that fourth team will be, when the group-stage fixtures are announced.

Hot weather causes a range of extra 999 calls

The police say calls about anti-social behaviour, noisy neighbours, dogs stuck in cars and people playing in dangerous water make up the bulk of their extra calls in hot weather.

The Warwickshire and West Mercia forces say they took more 999 calls this morning than on New Years Eve and believe the hot weather is the cause.


And the call-handlers say that when it's warm alcohol is quite often cause anti-social behaviour and disputes between neighbours.

Park to gain pond and play zone in flood defence work

Work to protect a local park from flooding will lead to the creation of a pond and play area, says Coventry City Council.

More than 13.5k cubic metres of soil will be removed from Coundon Hall Park to help intercept any flood water coming off nearby land and a shallow pond will be created.

It's hoped the new area will encourage frogs, newts and other wildlife to the park.

Hot weather causing high number of 999 calls

There have been more 999 calls to West Mercia and Warwickshire police this morning than there were on New Year's Eve.

The forces say they've also received almost double the number of calls to their 101 non-emergency number and that they often see spikes like this in hot weather.

They're urging people only to call 999 in a genuine emergency.

Four vehicles are involved in a collision on the M42 between junctions three and 3a, says the ambulance service.

It has an ambulance at the scene assisting one person who was trapped in a vehicle, and says one other was treated for minor injuries.

Cyber-crime and fraud prevention advice will be given to visitors at the Godiva Festival by officers from West Midlands Police.

Man jailed for driving wrong way down M40

A man who drove more than 10 miles the wrong way down the M40 when drunk has been jailed for 19 months.

Drunk M40 driver had no memory of going wrong way

Tony Chapman, from Tamworth in Arden, was eventually brought to a halt by police, who'd closed the carriageway after he was seen weaving across the road in Warwickshire.

Officers had to use "tactical contact" to force the car against the central reservation as it left the M40 in Worcestershire to go on to the M42.

During a police interview he said he had no recollection of driving the car.

At Worcester Crown Court yesterday the 62-year-old admitted dangerous driving, driving while drunk, possession of cannabis, and taking a vehicle without consent.

Man suffers fractured skull in Nuneaton assault

A man's being treated for a fractured skull after an assault in Nuneaton town centre yesterday, police say.

Officers say they responded to reports of an injured 19 year old on New Century Way at about 22:20 and believe it followed an earlier incident at the Co-op Club in Dugdale Street.
