'Unprecedented' dive operation saved Thai schoolboys

The operation to rescue Thai schoolboys, trapped in a cave, was "unprecedented" and more difficult than anything that has ever been attempted before, said Coventry diver Richard Stanton.

On his return to the UK today he said there was "chaos" surrounding the site of the rescue, but "we were so task orientated and focused that we blanked that out and carried on with the job in hand, step by step until we achieved success".

Answering questions from reporters at Heathrow, he denied the diving team were heroes: "We're just using a very very unique skill set, which we normally use for our own interest, and sometimes we're able to use that to give something back to the community, so that's what we did."

Asked if it was a rescue he dreamed of doing, he said "no, it's a rescue I dread doing".

The application, which needed to be confirmed by both Coventry and Warwick councils, due to its location, was passed by a vote of six to two.

The houses are scheduled to be built in the area just off Westwood Heath Road, which was recently designated for housing as part of the council’s Local Plan, removing its green belt protection.

The proposals are part of plans by local authorities in Coventry and Warwickshire to find space for 88,000 new homes by 2031.

Thai cave rescuer: 'Unbelievable' to find boys alive

A Coventry firefighter who was one of the first divers to find the Thai schoolboys trapped in a cave, said he was "relieved and excited" to have discovered them.

Rick Stanton
BBC

Richard Stanton and a team of divers, including Mike Clayton from Shropshire, have been speaking to reporters at Heathrow Airport.

He said to find all 13 still alive was just "unbelievable".

"As they were coming down the slope we were counting them, until we got to 13."

"We gave them some extra light, they looked in good health, but of course when we departed all we could think about was how we were going to get them out and so there was relief tempered with uncertainty".
