Police money goes to church projects to take load off bobbies
Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, is giving £2,000 to each of three local church groups to help them set up projects that take some of the strain off his officers.
The money is handed out under a scheme called the Cinnamon project, and the idea behind it is that police spend much of their time dealing with problems such as people with mental illness, where volunteers would be as effective.
In Cumbria, late-night social problems in Carlisle and Barrow have already led to the establishment of street pastor groups.
Police warning over tax scam phone calls
Cumbria police are warning of scam calls in west Cumbria, with the caller purporting to be from HMRC and saying that prosecution will follow unless a payment is made.

Marion's poppy project 'fantastic' says Prince
A project which has recruited dozens of volunteers to crochet poppies for an arts installation for the Royal British Legion's remembrance appeal was backed by the Prince of Wales in his visit yesterday.

About 40 groups such as WIs have already been recruited to make the poppies to a simple pattern designed by Marion Minshall, who presented the Prince with one of them yesterday.
The poppies will be pinned to a camouflaged tent outside the Kendal Leisure Centre in the fortnight running up to Remembrance Day, when it will be moved to Kendal Parish Church.
The project is part of the Kendal Woolgathering festival at the leisure centre on 28 and 29 October.
Walker flown to hospital after injuring back
Volunteers from the Langdale Ambleside rescue team and the Great North Air Ambulance went to the aid of a walker who fell near Easedale Tarn and suffered a back injury.

The woman, who's in her 60s, was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle.

Hospitals boss rules out police escorts for mums in labour

The man in charge of north Cumbria's hospitals has ruled out the idea of police officers escorting emergency maternity transfers from Whitehaven to Carlisle.

The escorts were suggested in a report by the Royal College of Anaesthetists earlier this year to ensure mothers could get to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle more quickly if a consultant-led maternity unit was closed in Whitehaven.
The North Cumbria Hospital Trust chief executive Stephen Eames has told BBC Radio Cumbria:

The chief executive of Cumbria's Chamber of Commerce says he's worried about the conintuing uncertainty over migration and exports after the UK leaves the EU.
In a message to members, Ron Johnston says: "Worryingly, we are no clearer about what the post-Brexit relationship with the EU will look like now than we were the day after the referendum in June last year.”

At Carlisle Crown Court today, Disley admitted possessing heroin with intent to supply.
Travel: Two hour delays on London trains after fire

Cathedral sculpture steps towards the end of times
The sculptress Christine Hurford has installed a work in Carlisle Cathedral that tries to show the last footsteps of mankind on earth.
The white fronds look like grass but are abstract representations of people, with the footsteps embedded in the surface between them.
The installation is part of C-Art, a county-wide festival involving studios, galleries and installations.
Locals warned to stay inside as barn blazes near Barrow
Fire crews from across the Furness peninsula have spent the afternoon fighting a major barn fire.
People living near the farm between Barrow and Dalton were asked to stay in doors and close their windows and Park Road was closed because of smoke.
The fire broke out in the barn at Sinkfall Farm on Rakesmoor Lane at 13:30 and five fire engines are still in attendance.
The barn contains hay and machinery. Gas cylinders have been removed by firefighters.
Travel: Three-car crash slows A590 near Lindale

Three cars have collided on the eastbound carriageway of Lindale Hill at the sliproad for the B5271, partially blocking the road.
