New order could tackle 'boy racers'

Marcus Alton

Reporter, Radio Nottingham

Police could get new powers to tackle the problem of so-called boy racers in Ashfield.

A consultation's being launched over plans to hand out fines to offenders because car cruising is a particular problem near the M1 junction 27 and the Hucknall bypass.

The issue is currently being tackled by Nottinghamshire Police who are enforcing an injunction obtained by Nottinghamshire County Council.

But that injunction, which prohibits car cruising in these areas, expires in January.

Ashfield District Council is looking to create an order which will give police the powers to fine those who cause a nuisance.

A consultation will last just over five weeks meaning a new order could come into force early in the new year.

The couple said they wanted to return home because of their cats and for security.

The tiles have been lifted off the roof but the couple believe they were lucky because their bungalow was protected by next door's two-storey house.

Around them the scene is devastation with neighbours' windows blown in, garage doors blow in, blinds and curtains hanging out and the entire contents of someone’s loft left exposed.

A spokesman for Jet2 said staff worked "very hard" to operate the flight despite the "continued adverse weather".

“Unfortunately, high winds at Arricife Airport meant that the flight had to be diverted to Fuerteventura, where we arranged hotel accommodation.

"We sincerely apologise to all affected customers for any inconvenience caused by these extraordinary circumstances, which are beyond our control, and we will have customers on their way as soon as possible today."

The firm said it had "not cancelled a single flight" from the UK despite "challenging weather conditions".
