Man assaulted during house burglary

A man was assaulted during an aggravated burglary at his house in Worksop.

Nottinghamshire Police said two men wearing face coverings forced their way into the property in Briar Lea and took a Jaguar car.

The car was later found abandoned in Windmill Lane.

Officers have arrested two men aged 28 and 40 on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

The event was organised by Nottingham City Council to give families a chance to build their confidence, develop their English skills and meet new people.

Women attacked twice in Christmas Eve ordeal

A woman was attacked and robbed by a man who came to her aid after she fought off another robber in Derby city centre on Christmas Eve.

Police said the 22-year-old was pushed and punched as she fended off a man who tried to take her bag and phone as she walked along Monk Street at about 03:00.

After the robber ran away, another man helped her up and offered to walk her home - before punching her four times in Stockbrook Street and stealing her valuables.

Police said the victim suffered a number of injuries in the "very serious offence".

Couple 'disgusted' by cancelled hip operation

Ken Roberts, from Shepshed is among those who've had operations at Leicester General Hospital cancelled this week due to a surge in the number of patients at A&E.

The 80-year-old's "urgent" hip operation was scheduled for 11 January but has been shelved, despite him being reassured five times during an assessment on 28 December that it would go ahead.

His wife Jenny, 69, who is registered disabled and struggles to look after her husband, said: "Disgusted does not cover it. My husband can't walk. We have no quality of life whatsoever. There are weeks and weeks where my husband can't get out of the house."

"The apologies from Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt don't cut it, not when I hear my husband crying in pain. His hip has totally gone - he now has one leg two inches shorter than the other."

The Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham is no longer on the highest level of alert despite "remaining under pressure".

On Tuesday night it was placed on operational pressures escalation level (OPEL) 4 status - formerly known as "black alert".

This afternoon it has dropped to OPEL 3.


"Slightly fewer patients are attending our Emergency Department (ED) compared to the start of the week and we continue to see a high number of very poorly patients who require admission to our hospitals, notably frail older people and those with respiratory conditions. We expect the weekend to be busy again and therefore ask people only come to ED if it is a real emergency so that we can prioritise those patients who most need our care and treatment."

East Mids MPs question release of prolific sex attacker

A number of East Midlands MPs have added their signatures to a cross-party letter calling on Justice Secretary David Lidington to urgently investigate the decision to release sex attacker John Worboys on parole.

Former black-cab driver Worboys is believed to have carried out more than 100 rapes and sexual assaults on women and his release has been condemned by victims' groups and charities.

Lilian Greenwood (Nottingham South), Liz Kendall (Leicester West), Toby Perkins (Chesterfield), Ruth George (High Peak) and Vernon Coaker (Gedling) are among 58 MPs that signed the letter.

It reads: "We are concerned at the management of his application for release and the MoJ's role in this regard, and the questions this may raise for victims and survivors of serious sexual assault."

The chairman of the parole board has said the decision had been "carefully considered" and the panel was "confident" the 60-year-old would not reoffend.

Vandals 'used vehicle to smash up house'

Police have recovered a vehicle they believe was used to cause major damage to an empty house in Tuxford.

Officers rushed to the Ollerton Road property yesterday morning following reports it could be about to collapse. The vehicle was found abandoned nearby.

The case was described as "very unusual" by Notts Police, who said they believed it was an "isolated attack".

Chesterfield have signed Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan until the end of the season.

Ramsdale joined Bournemouth from Sheffield United in January 2016, but has yet to make his debut for the Premier League side.

The 19-year-old helped England win the European Under-19 Championship in July, starting every game.
