  5. £30m Dawlish sea wall build to start on Saturday

    Daniel Clark

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Work will begin on Saturday on the £30m scheme that will see a new sea wall built at Dawlish.

The plans will raise the wall from its current height of 5m to 7.5m and widen the walkway to 4m.

The aim is to stop storms from damaging the railway and secure the future of the line linking Devon and Cornwall to the rest of the UK for the next 100 years.

The work will last nine months, with phase one running from Saturday until 14 July.

No work will take place during the summer season and it'll restart in September with a scheduled finish in January.

  6. Three-weekly bin collections trial in West Devon

    Daniel Clark

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Rubbish bin collections could take place every three weeks for 1,000 homes in West Devon from November.

West Devon Borough Council's hub committee are being asked next Tuesday to approve a trial to start later this year.

If the trial is successful in increasing recycling rates, the system could be rolled out to the rest of the region.

Non-recyclable waste is currently collected fortnightly. The recycling and food waste collections would remain weekly and the garden waste service would continue as normal.

The net savings expected from a three-weekly scheme across the whole borough is estimated at between £100,000 and £150,000 per year.

A report will come back to the hub committee after six months detailing any environmental and financial impacts, and determining the effects of a borough-wide scheme. If successful and subsequently agreed by the council, a borough-wide roll out could take place in March 2021.

  7. Lifeguards rescue group of children on Bantham beach

    Johnny O'Shea

    BBC News Online

A group of children aged between eight and 10 were rescued by lifeguards after getting caught in a rip current on a popular Devon beach.

The incident happened just after 18:00 on Tuesday, just after lifeguards had finished their patrols on Bantham Beach.

Three lifeguards were debriefing for the day when they spotted five children close to a rip current.

They saw three of them getting into difficulties and launched a rescue.

One of the children couldn't swim and drifted out to sea where they were starting to disappear in the water.

Lifeguard Loic Doison managed to pull him onto his board - the other two children were clinging onto rocks and were rescued by Lewis Horne and Nick Triggol.

Quote Message: The children were extremely lucky that the lifeguards were still around and able to react so quickly. We'd advise anyone entering the water to visit a lifeguarded beach, if you find yourself caught in a rip current, we'd advise not trying to swim against it or you'll get exhausted. If you can stand, wade don't swim. If you can, swim parallel to the shore until free of the rip and then head for shore. Always raise your hand and shout for help.' from Kate Doison RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor
