    Severe disruption: M40 Oxfordshire southbound

    M40 Oxfordshire - One lane closed on M40 southbound between J10, A43 (Brackley) and J9, A34 (Bicester), because of an earlier lorry fire and recovery work. Traffic is coping well.

  2. Sam Kyme died 'knowing children would be OK'

    Pippa Hughes (pictured right), the sister of Sam Kyme, who died after raising more than £40,000 so her sons could move to Australia to live with Pippa, said she died "knowing everything is sorted for her kids."

    She added: "It's amazing how life can change in a year. This time last year it was Christmas and we were all together and this year it's completely changed.

    "There was no warning, you just never know what's going to happen.

    "We've got a few days now to scream and shout and cry, but Christmas, we're going to make it for Sam.

    "She wanted everyone to be together and get on and have fun, so we'll do that."

  3. Man stabbed in Caversham attempted robbery

    A man's been stabbed in the chest in an attempted robbery in Caversham, Berkshire.

    The 57-year-old was attacked after two men came up to him in an alleyway near South View Avenue demanding money.

    Police say they are looking for two men around 20 years old.

    Both were wearing hooded tops and scarves over their faces. One was carrying a crossbow.

  5. Bournemouth car driver, 77, admits killing pedestrian

    A 77-year-old car driver has admitted causing the death of a pedestrian in Bournemouth.

    Lewis Thorne pleaded guilty earlier to causing the death of an 87-year-old woman by careless driving outside his home in Southbourne Road on 26 April.

    The woman died in hospital after suffering serious injuries to her head and legs, police said.

    Thorne, of Glendale House, is due to be sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on 11 January.

  6. Mum dies after raising £40,000 for sons

    A woman with motor neurone disease who raised more than £40,000 to enable her sons to live with her sister in Australia has died.

    Sam Kyme, 34, of Oxfordshire, could no longer talk, but made the plea through her friends on a crowdfunding website.

    The cash will be used to fund the funeral, plane tickets, and legal and school fees.

    Friend Susanna Howard said she passed away on Thursday morning "peacefully with her family around her".

    She added: "The family are deeply saddened but also relieved that she is no longer suffering.

    "Thank you to everyone for the incredible generosity and support during these difficult and devastating months.

    "We know that Sam would like everyone to celebrate her life by raising a glass to her and her family at this festive time."

    Ms Kyme was diagnosed in April and told she had months to live. Within two months she could no longer speak.

  7. 'Inspirational' chief executive leaves NHS trust

    An "inspirational" chief executive is to leave a Southampton hospital to take up a new job in Canada.

    Fiona Dalton was praised in a Care Quality Commission (CQC) report in June for leading "substantial improvements" at University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust.

    The CQC highlighted her regular lunches with patients to gather feedback.

    Ms Dalton, who took up the post in November 2013, will leave the trust in March.

  9. Isle of Wight chip shop offers deep-fried Christmas dinner

    Battered Brussels sprouts, a turkey and stuffing fritter and deep-fried pigs in blankets are all on the menu at a takeaway this Christmas.

    Corries Cabin, in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, initially started offering deep-fried sprouts as a way to boost business in the festive period.

    The boss has since added an extra item to the menu each year and now boasts a full deep-fried Christmas dinner.
