  2. Log burner 'explosion' in Midgham

    A women has been treated in hospital after a log burner exploded, Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has said.

    Firefighters were called to Midgham at about 20:00 (GMT).

    They say the women sustained "minor injuries".

  3. Dorset Echo: Three quizzed over 'hit and run' death

    Today's Dorset Echo leads on the reaction of people in Dorchester to a suspected hit-and-run crash in Dorset.

    The 39-year-old woman was fatally injured on The Grove, shortly before 20:00 GMT on Wednesday.

    She was taken to hospital but died later.

  5. Inspectors to examine stricken ship

    The Maritime Coastguard Agency is carrying out a full inspection today of a Russian cargo ship which became stranded in the Solent earlier this week.

    The Yartsev ran into difficulties on Boxing Day and the vessel was towed into the Port of Southampton yesterday.

    The MCA will now assess the vessel to bring it upright and do any repairs needed.

  6. Power cuts following bad weather

    A number of areas in the south of England have reported power cuts following the strong winds and heavy rain which swept across the region earlier.

    About 2,000 properties were without power at some point, with about 600 still off.

    SSEN expecting to have all properties back on the network by 16:00.

    Properties affected are in the New Forest, Swanage, Weymouth and the Meon Valley.

  7. Delays after train breakdown

    A broken down train at Hilsea is causing disruption to journeys to and from Portsmouth Harbour.

    National Rail says it's blocked the line and another train is being sent to the site to get it moving.

    Some services may be delayed or diverted until it can be cleared.

    The disruption is expected to last until 12:00 (GMT), it says.

  8. Fallen trees cause disruption on Hampshire roads

    New Forest District Council is reporting a tree down on the A337 between Highcliff and New Milton causing an obstruction to traffic following the stormy weather earlier this morning.

    Lead has been stolen from the roof of a primary school in Didcot.

    All Saints School was targeted at about 05:00 GMT, police say.

    They'd like to speak to a man who was spotted on CCTV about the offence.

  10. Lightning strike causes plane U-turn

    An Aurigny flight carrying 69 passengers from Guernsey to Manchester was "struck by lightning" over the Isle of Wight, and then returned to the island.

    A spokesman from the National Air Traffic Services said the strike at about 08:00 resulted in the aircraft GR670 "losing some of its electrics" and the captain decided to turn the aircraft round as a precaution.

    The plane was on course to land in Southampton Airport, but the spokesman said this would have meant "flying further into the storm at that time".

    Guernsey Airport Director, Colin Le Ray, confirmed the aircraft landed successfully at 08:34, and all passengers were being transferred to an alternative plane.

  14. Tributes to Oxford professor

    The flag at Oriel College, Oxford, has been flying at half-mast following the death of historian, Mark Whiitow on the M40.

    The 60-year-old was a Medieval historian and archaeologist and had been named as the next provost, or head, of the college.

    Prof Martin Conway, chairman of Oxford University's History Faculty, said: "The entire Oxford community has been left deeply saddened by Mark's tragic death".

    A 29-year-old man from Warwickshire also died in the crash on the M40 near Banbury on Saturday.

  15. Cyclist injured in Weymouth crash

    A cyclist has suffered serious leg injuries after being hit by a car in Weymouth.

    The 55-year-old man was taken to Dorset County Hospital following the crash on Avenue Road near the Walpole Street junction on Thursday morning.

    A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and released while inquiries continue.

    Police are appealing for drivers with dash cam footage of the incident to get in touch.
