Extra police in Reading for England's World Cup match against Belgium

Extra police officers will be drafted into Reading on Thursday night as large numbers of football fans are expected to watch England compete in the World Cup against Belgium on a big screen.

There is likely to be congestion in Friar Street after the final whistle when people start to leave, so members of the public are advised to avoid the area, Thames Valley Police said.

The road will be closed for the duration of the match, which kicks off at 19:00 BST.

The big screen, at The Biscuit Tin cafe and bar on Station Hill, will only be visible to people who have tickets.

Dorset police force merger plan moves forward

Local Democracy Reporting Service

A merger between Dorset and the combined Devon and Cornwall police forces could be decided with an 'in principal' decision by the Minister in less than a year.

Dorset Police and Crime Panel has been told that it will look in detail at the business case for the merger on 27 September with the deadline for formal comments on the proposal set for 12 October.

He said the panel would be asked to look at whether or not the merger proposals were likely to improve efficiency and effectiveness and have an impact on public safety and public support.

A "strategic alliance" between the forces, started in 2015.

BBQ ban at Moors Valley Country Park

Disposable barbecues are being banned at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest in Ashley Heath from Sunday.

It's to try to reduce the chance of fires and environmental damage.

Visitors to the park will still be able to use barbecues - but only portable, re-usable ones.

Rangers at the park, are hoping that the step will also encourage visitors to reduce the amount of waste they produce which goes to landfill.

Petition to push for 50m pool in Reading

A campaign group is calling for a new 50m pool to be built in Reading.

More than 2,500 people have signed a petition which was given to Reading Borough Council last night.

The group, RG50, say current facilities are inadequate after the closure of Arthur Hill and Central swimming pools.

It says it is more economical to maintain and operate a single 50m pool than two 25m pools and a larger pool could easily be divided into two 25m pools so that it can cater for the needs of the whole community.

They want a new pool opened by 1 January 2021 at the very latest.

The Tank Museum in Dorset has started an appeal to find the Military Cross (MC) won by the commander of its Mark V tank 100 years ago at the Battle of Amiens.

Harold Whittenbury’s heroics at the battle, which included ramming a building with his tank, earned him the bravery medal.

But its whereabouts are unknown and the museum has found scant information about the man who commanded the tank that is on display.

Sudden sinkhole appearance causes disruption

The sudden appearance of a sinkhole has closed Bennet Road in Reading.

Thames Water is assessing the damage which is believed to be the result of a broken water main.

The broken pipe was discovered on Tuesday when the road surface began to break up due to water from the pipe washing away the supporting ground underneath.

Thames Water’s Tom Hutchinson said: “We suspect it could take up to a week [to repair] as there is a lot to do."
