Bouncy castle ban brought in by Havant Borough Council

Bouncy castles and other inflatables are to be banned at events on land owned by Havant Borough Council.

The local authority said the move followed recent tragedies involving bouncy castles and inflatables in Essex and Norfolk.

Three-year-old Ava-May Littleboy was thrown 20ft in the air when the inflatable trampoline she was playing on exploded on Gorleston Beach, Norfolk, on Sunday.

Her death came a fortnight after two fairground workers were jailed for manslaughter by gross negligence after a bouncy castle flew away with a young girl inside.

Summer Grant, seven, died after the inflatable was carried 300m across a park in Harlow, Essex, in March 2016.

The recent tragedies involving bouncy castles and inflatables were due in one case to the inflatable being insufficiently moored in Essex (which is a manageable risk) and the other, in Norfolk, to an explosion for causes as yet unknown. The extreme high temperatures that are currently being experienced may have been a major contributory factor to the explosion, however we don't know this for certain. Until the cause of the explosion has been properly identified, it is not possible to manage this risk."

Police and MP at odds over Portsmouth World Cup big screen idea

There is a row brewing about whether there should be a big screen in Portsmouth showing the England v Sweden World Cup match on Saturday.

Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan wrote to the council leader Gerarld Vernon-Jackson urging him to erect a big screen,

“Sport both builds, and unites, communities. In our football loving city, I urge you to do all you can as Leader of the City Council to provide a public space for local people to come together as a city to watch England’s match on Saturday,” he said.

However a Hampshire police spokesperson said the force had advised the council against the idea due to "the considerable risks in relation to crime and disorder and safeguarding".

But she added the final decision laid with the council and the police would "evaluate the threat, harm and risk posed and will resource it with officers and staff as appropriate".

New Slough development get for go-ahead

Tara Maxwell

BBC Radio Berkshire newsreader

Plans to build two new hotels and 64 flats in Slough town centre are expected to be approved by the council later.

The development is planned for a prime location in the centre of Slough and is being built on the site of the old - and many would say little-loved - library which was built in the brutalist style.

The hotels will have 244 rooms between them and the flats will be a mix of studios, one and two bedrooms.

Slough council believes it's another reminder that the town is very much on the up, with developers keen to cash in on the Crossrail services which are due to start running through the town within the next couple of years.
