  1. Electrification of Great Western Mainline to Swindon completed

    New GWR train

    Work has been completed on electrifying a further section of railway line between London and south Wales.

    Modernisation of the Great Western Mainline has been extended to Swindon.

    Network Rail said it will allow "more frequent services, thousands more seats and quicker journeys" from next year.

    The work to electrify the line between Didcot Parkway and Swindon is part of a wider plan to modernise the Great Western Mainline.

  2. 'Forget deserving issues and focus on basics' - Sara Thornton

    The Thames Valley's former chief constable says forces should focus on catching thieves and violent criminals, and not incidents where no offence has been committed.

    Sara Thornton said forces are too stretched to deal with "deserving" issues, such as logging gender-based hate incidents.

    Claims against dead people was also taking resources from tackling "today's crime today", she told a conference.

    She called for a "refocus on core policing".

    Ms Thornton, who chairs the National Police Chiefs' Council, spoke out as statistics show arrests have halved in the past decade.

  4. Oxford, Reading and Southampton top list of best places to live

    Oxford is still the best place to live and work in Britain, according to the Good Growth for Cities Index.

    It's the second year in a row the city has been ranked highest by research from accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and the think tank Demos.

    Reading is second, and third-placed Southampton is also one the five most improved cities.

    They analyse things like employment, workers' pay, house prices, transport, and the environment to make the list.

    This year's index shows a continuing gap between the highest performing places and the lowest ranking, Swansea and Sunderland.
