  4. Renovation work on iconic music venue delayed

    The Cellar

Renovation work at a popular music venue in Oxford, which was saved from closure after more than £90,000 was raised through crowdfunding, will begin in either February or March.

The Cellar was limited to a capacity of 60 people after inspectors ruled its fire escape was 30cm [11.8in] too small.

Its owners launched a campaign backed by a host of Oxford musicians, including Gaz Coombes, Philip Selway from Radiohead, Mark Gardener from Ride, Yannis Philippakis from Foals and the band Glass Animals.

Manager Tim Hopkins originally said work could begin in January, but in an update on progress he said: "We've been having some very positive meetings with the structural engineers and builders... We are also still kneedeep in ongoing rent negotiations.

"It's all taking time to get it absolutely right. As a result we are looking to start work a bit later than hoped in February/March."

The venue will be open as usual in January.
