  2. Thomas Hardy young poetry prize opens for entries

    The National Trust in Dorset has launched a new poetry prize for young people inspired by the writings of Thomas Hardy.

    The Thomas Hardy young poetry prize is open to 13-18 year olds who live or go to school in Dorset.

    Competition entries can be of any length, and on any theme, but should be inspired by a love of Hardy’s writing or his landscape.

    The winners will be invited to an award afternoon on 2 June – Thomas Hardy’s birthday – at Max Gate.

  6. Firefighters tackle house blaze

    Crews are tackling a house fire in Gosport.

    Twenty-six firefighters from four stations were called to Nyria Way shortly after 12:00.

    People are being advised to avoid the area and residents urged to keep doors and windows closed.

  7. School road closure scheme to help tackle pollution

    Some schools in Southampton are closing their roads during the school run to traffic today.

    It's all part of a campaign by the charity Sustrans called the Big Pedal Challenge.

    The challenge aims to encourage more young people to cycle, walk and scoot to school.

    It's to help improve air quality outside schools.

  8. Spring clean for Tudor castle ahead of D-Day anniversary

    Southsea Castle is getting a spring clean and spruce up.

    The council has earmarked £15,000 to clean the outside of the castle and repoint some of the stone work.

    Steve Pitt, of Portsmouth City Council, said: "With Southsea being in the spotlight this summer more than ever with D-Day 75, we want the 476-year-old Southsea Castle to look its best."

    Portsmouth is due to host events commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day later this year.

    The castle was built in 1544 for Henry VIII as part of a network of coastal fortifications.

  10. Road closed as injured man found

    A road in Reading has been cordoned off after a man was found injured.

    Police said the man was discovered inside a property in George Street shortly before 09:00 GMT.

    He is being treated in hospital - the extent of his injuries are not yet known.

    The road has been closed while officers examine the scene.

  11. CCTV appeal after kebab house doorman punched

    A man who punched a doorman at a kebab house in Wimborne is being sought by police.

    Dorset Police said the doorman was injured in the attack in the early hours of 23 December.
