  1. Andover leisure centre opens after temporary pool row

A new £16m swimming pool has opened in Andover - two years after the old leisure centre closed and sparked a row over temporary facilities.

Campaigners held protests following the closure of the pool in Shepherds Spring Lane in March 2017 without any alternative provision in place. Pool users said it forced them to travel to Romsey, Eastleigh or Basingstoke.

Test Valley Borough Council agreed to provide a 25m temporary pool by August 2017, but the date was later put back by the contractor.

The council described the new centre as a "state-of-the-art leisure facility".

Police were called at 08:57 BST to Ram's Hill near Sturminster Newton.

  3. Boat race joins fight against plastic

Pubs on the Thames will be serving pints in reusable cups for the boat race in a bid to cut plastic pollution in the river, it has been announced.

Some 14,000 reusable cups have been ordered and will be used by eight pubs along the river and on the high street for the sporting event on Sunday April 7.

Spectators of the annual rowing competition between Oxford and Cambridge universities will be able to reuse their cups or return them to the pubs, allowing them to be washed and reused up to 50 times.

The scheme's organisers, Positively Putney Business Improvement District, hopes it will prevent 50,000 single-use plastic cups ending up in the river or heading for landfill, in one day.

  4. Woman burnt by exploding vape battery

A woman suffered burns to her leg and stomach after an e-cigarette battery caught fire in her coat pocket.

The lithium battery is believed to have been short-circuited by loose change, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

The woman was treated at the scene in a pub in Swanage on Saturday evening.

Fire officer Graham Kewley said: "The explosion could have easily resulted in shrapnel-type wounds to the leg. There have been similar incidents elsewhere that have resulted in fatalities."
