    Land off Castle Lane

Plans to build 27 homes in a north Dorset village have been approved.

Opponents said the proposal would destroy the "picturesque oasis of peace" of Okeford Fitzpaine, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Despite objections, Dorset Council granted permission for AJ Developments to build on the site off Castle Lane.

  2. Dakota visit postponed by weather

    A Douglas C47 'Dakota'

The arrival of three historic Dakota aircraft at Solent Airport has been postponed because of the weather.

The Douglas C-47s have been flown from the US, via Canada, Greenland and Iceland, to take part in the D-Day 75 commemorations.

They had been due to visit Solent Airport from their temporary base at Duxford today.

It is hoped the visit can be rescheduled for later in the week.

The aircraft are among more than a dozen convening from across the world to cross the English Channel and drop 250 parachutists over Normandy in a re-enactment of D-Day on 5 June.

    The Bargate

Historic buildings in Southampton such as the Bargate could be opened to the public if a bid for funding is successful.

Southampton City Council is hoping to receive up to £25m of government funding to transform the city centre, including commercial units in the High Street.

The authority wants to connect the area from West Quay to the new Bargate development and Debenhams, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

  5. City running out of burial space

    Wolvercote Cemetery in Oxford

Cemetery space in Oxford is set to run out in two years - making it the first authority in the country unable to offer its residents a burial plot.

The city council is considering measures to extend that time period to 2023.

One option is to reclaim some graves - including so-called "unpurchased" plots that already have human remains in them.

Further burials would then happen a minimum of six inches above the previous interment.

  6. Husband jailed for boat death in US

    Lewis Bennett and Isabella Hellmann

A man who killed his wife at sea three months after their wedding has been jailed for eight years.

Isabella Hellmann, 41, vanished when the couple's catamaran sank in the straits of Florida in May 2017.

Her husband Lewis Bennett, 42, from Poole, Dorset, was found in a life raft with antique coins which he had previously reported as stolen.

Bennett pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter at a previous court hearing in Florida.
