Fire extinguished at recycling centre

Carson Wishart

Journalist, BBC Hereford and Worcester

The fire at a recycling centre in Stourport, Worcestershire, is now out, the fire service says.

I've been to Barracks Road, where the blaze happened this afternoon, and fire crews have been packing away their equipment.

Smoke from the fire
Manda Wright

It was reported earlier by the fire service that a tanker had hit a building.

But I've spoken to the managing director of Slickers Recycling and he's clarified that an oil tanker was involved but there was no collision.

He said they collect oil to recycle and, after draining oil from a vehicle this afternoon, it caught fire, although at this stage, they're not certain why.

It's happened in the Barracks Road area to the south of the town, but Twitter user @FizzleW took this photo from the north of Stourport in the Burlish area:

BreakingHuge blaze after 'oil tanker hits building'

Claudia Berry

BBC News

An oil tanker has caught fire after it is believed to have hit a building in Stourport.

The fire is on Barracks Road, not far from the town centre, and has led to a plume of black smoke that is visible for miles around.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue says five fire engines are at the scene.

The ambulance service says there are no reports of any causalities.

BBC Hereford and Worcester was told staff at the town's marina were told to evacuate as a precaution, but have been allowed to return.

Drought-hit river continues to dry out

The Environment Agency has had its drone up above the River Teme in Herefordshire again, this time to the village of Leintwardine (visible in the top of this photo).

Chris Bainger said there was some water flowing here, a few miles away from Stanage, where we saw a dried-up river bed yesterday.

But he warns it is likely to dry up there soon and expects to be back, to help rescue fish.

The Environment Agency has already rescued hundreds of salmon and trout from the river and is asking people to report any which appear to be in distress.

A Public Spaces Protection Order was brought in in August 2015 and means people face fines if they refuse to stop drinking alcohol when told to by a police officer.

But Wyre Forest District Council wants to extend it to 2021 and has started a consultation until 6 August as it says the problem remains an issue.

Poundland removes kitchen knives from stores

BBC Midlands Today

Poundland has removed kitchen knives from sale in all of its West Midlands stores from today, in response to community concerns regarding knife crime.

Bosses at the discount chain, based in Willenhall, have already stopped selling knives at stores in London and plan to ban them nationwide by the end of the year.

Poundland
BBC

The firm said over the last four years it had only sold knives in sealed plastic packaging and stocked them in aisles monitored by CCTV.

However, it said the ban was being introduced "after thoughtful reflection about concerns raised by both communities and colleagues".

Poundland said it had prioritised the West Midlands after a recent Home Office report revealed it experienced the biggest increase in knife crime of any part of the country outside London.

The ambulance service said it was receiving a lot of calls about children getting sunstroke and people drinking too much alcohol in the sun and becoming dehydrated.

Steve Wheaton, Strategic Director said the service had also seen a "huge" increase in calls from the elderly.

"They're not drinking enough during the day, and then at night they're trying to get out of bed, they're dehydrated, they're confused and they're falling," he said.
