  6. Hospital 'short of what it needs' to cope with winter

    James Pearson

Political reporter, BBC Hereford & Worcester

About 100 extra agency nurses are needed to help Worcestershire's main hospitals cope with winter pressures.

That's according to Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust's new chief operating officer Paul Brennan, who's been setting out the latest plans today to the trust's board.

    Sign for Worcestershire Royal Hospital

His best-case scenarios currently put the Worcestershire Royal Hospital 41 beds short of what it needs to cope with winter pressures.

This morning, hospital bosses discussed those winter plans, with analysis suggesting the hospital will struggle to meet demand, though Redditch's Alexandra Hospital is expected to have a surplus of beds.

Mr Brennan says managers are working hard to come up with new plans before the start of December.

  9. WW1 train named after county's VC winner

The only Herefordshire soldier to win a Victoria Cross during World War One has been honoured this morning with a train bearing his name.

    The train

Great Western Railway (GWR) unveiled the Intercity Express this morning at Paddington Station, naming it after Allan Leonard Lewis and a flying ace from the conflict.

Mr Lewis, born in Whitney-on-Wye, near Hereford, died in September 1918 while getting his men under cover from heavy machine gun fire.

As well as naming it after the two men, GWR says the train also features the names of all 2,545 men from the railway service who died in the war.

    Vicky Breakwell

Bed shortages and expensive agency staff have left hospitals in Worcestershire with a £32m deficit after just six months of the financial year, a report says.

    Worcestershire Royal Hospital

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust board's meeting today and heard that fewer available beds means they haven't been able to carry out as much elective, planned care.

Hospital bosses say they've also had to turn to expensive agency nurses through the summer.

The NHS trust was placed in special measures in December 2015 and remains so, with the report saying it's working with NHS Improvement to get access to cash needed to maintain services.
