Praise for doctors serving the homeless in Brighton
Sarah Booker-Lewis
Local Democracy Reporter
A doctors' surgery serving the homeless in Brighton and Hove is making a positive difference, health chiefs say.
A report has reviewed progress made by Arch Healthcare since it took over running the specialist homeless GP surgery in Morley Street, Brighton, in March last year.
Fewer of the surgery's 1,340 patients now turn up at A&E at the Royal Sussex County Hospital - and fewer of those who are admitted end up being readmitted.
The progress has been made despite the rising number of rough sleepers in the area.
The Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Primary Care Commissioning Committee praised the degree of collaboration, which also included outreach work by nurses from Morley Street.

New homes planned for Kent village
Caitlin Webb
Local Democracy Reporter
Councillors have approved plans for 43 homes to be built in a village which dates back to the medieval ages.
Ashford Borough Council agreed at a meeting on 15 August for a housing estate roughly the size of two rugby pitches to be built in High Halden.
High Halden boasts a church believed to have been built in the 13th century.
The village is also known for a large pub, The Chequers on the Green, which was cited in the Domesday book and known to have been used by smugglers in the Georgian era.

New homes given approval
Huw Oxburgh
Local Democracy Reporter
Planners have given the go ahead for a new build in Bexhill despite objections from neighbours.
At a meeting of Rother District Council's planning committee on 16 August, councillors approved plans to build a two-bedroom bungalow and create a new car parking area on land connected to Fairfield Chase.
The parking area is expected to have space for six cars and will also serve two listed stone cottages on the site.
Locals who objected claimed it would add too much traffic to a quiet cul-de-sac.
Bexhill cafe keen to get new seating
Huw Oxburgh
Local Democracy Reporter
Plans to build an outside seating area for a Bexhill seafront cafe have been granted planning permission.
At a meeting of Rother District Council's planning committee on 16 August, councillors approved the construction of a decking area on the beach opposite the Sovereign Light Cafe.
Although concerns were raised about staff and customers crossing a public footpath with hot food, the plans were approved unanimously by the committee.
The application appeared before the committee as the land is owned by Rother District Council, which leases it to the cafe.
