    Gun being handed over

During the first week of a national firearms surrender 26 firearms have been handed in to police stations in Kent.

The two-week initiative offers people the opportunity to dispose of unwanted or illegally held guns and ammunition, including stun guns, pepper spray, BB guns, component parts and other ballistic items.

It is running until Saturday 6 August.

During this period, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for illegal possession, and can remain anonymous.

Among those items handed in were nine air rifles and 14 shotguns.

A total of 124 rounds of ammunition have also been handed in.

Supt Mick Gardner said: "We are pleased that people are thinking about what they have in their possession and bringing them into stations.

"Just one firearm handed in is one firearm taken off the streets and unable to get into the wrong hands."

People who cannot get to a station should call 101 to arrange collection.

  9. Children asylum seekers numbers 'could rise'

    Ciaran Duggan

    Local Democracy Reporter

The number of asylum-seeking children taken in by Kent County Council since last year could rise by 45% by 2020.

A total of 137 children from countries around the world, including Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iran, have been taken in by Kent County Council over the last seven months.

If the rate of growth continues at the current rate, the number is expected to reach around 250 by the end of the year – surpassing last year’s total intake of 172 children over the 12-month period, Roger Gough, cabinet member for children, young people and education, said.

A report released a month ago showed KCC is currently facing a £6.1m shortfall in the costs of looking after vulnerable asylum-seeking children, with much being blamed on central government for under-funding.

A total of 315 asylum-seeking people aged under 18 are currently being looked after by the authority – this number has increased by nearly 15% since June.

Guildford Borough Council will spend around £20,000 to get a second opinion of its adopted Local Plan.

Councillors voted to appoint another QC to check they followed correct processes ahead of a challenge against the plan in the High Court.

And it will also carry out a review of whether some of the 10,678 homes it needs to build by 2034 can be on brown field sites instead of green belt land.

The review of its own Local Plan before the case in court got the backing of the new administration and councillors – some of whom voted against adopting the Local Plan.
