Hospital staff make Star Wars mask for 10-year-old cancer patient

A 10-year-old Star Wars fan, who is being treated for brain cancer, has had a radiotherapy mask that resembles a Storm Trooper made by hospital staff.

Reece Holt, from Morecambe, is being treated at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Wirral after brain surgery.

The specially moulded mask is used to ensure patients stay still during radiotherapy treatment.

Each mask is made to measure and his parents said Reece was thrilled when he realised his had a Star Wars theme.

Football: Bradford trigger Blackpool keeper's £1 release fee

Bradford City are confident of signing Blackpool goalkeeper Colin Doyle after triggering his release clause of £1.

The 31-year-old is club captain and was one of Blackpool's best performers in League One last season as the club suffered consecutive relegations.

Doyle will have a medical early next week and will join midfielder Nicky Law and defender Nathaniel Knight-Percival as summer recruits at Valley Parade.

Masked men threaten staff at Rawtenstall jewellers

Two masked men have threatened staff before stealing items from a jewellery shop in Rawtenstall.

The men then escaped in a Chrysler car after targeting Janet Isherwood Jewellery Workshop in Kay Street this morning.

It was later found burnt out nearby in Dobbin Lane and it is believed they then switched to a white van and headed off towards Newchurch Road.

Milestone fuselage manufactured at BAE in Samlesbury

The 250th fuselage for the RAF and Royal Navy's new stealth fighter has been produced at BAE Systems’ advanced manufacturing facility in Samlesbury.

The section of the F-35 Lightning II will be equipped and tested before being transported to a final assembly facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

The company employs around 1,500 people on the programme making parts for the single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft.

Call for 'Seaside Tsar' to save seaside towns

A "Seaside Tsar" should be appointed to help forgotten seaside towns like Blackpool recover from decades of decay, according to the British Hospitality Association (BHA).

The report says that people living in Britain's seaside resorts are more likely to be poorly educated, unemployed, lacking in ambition, claiming benefits and living in multiple occupation housing.   

The BHA has produced a seven-point action plan which calls on the government to take action.

The 26-year-old returned to Stanley in February 2015 from Cheltenham for his second stint with the club, and helped them reach the play-offs last season.

St Annes hotel owners face trial over pool death

The owners of hotel where a three-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool are to face trial over alleged health and safety failures.

Jane Bell got into difficulty at the Dalmeny Hotel in St Annes in August 2014.

The hotel's owners have been charged with failing in their duty to ensure the safety of guests and failing to make a risk assessment.

They will face trial at Preston Crown Court in August.

It's believed Newcastle have offered £3.5m and a second, improved bid of £4.5m but Coyle says they're "nowhere near" his valuation of the centre-back.

Biker, 23, killed in Whittle-le-Woods car crash

A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a car in a village.

The 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Preston Road, Whittle-le-Woods, at about 14:45 on Sunday.

He had been riding towards Preston when his Honda motorcycle was in collision with a BMW at the junction with Factory Lane, Lancashire Police said. 

Officers are appealing for witnesses to contact the force.

New £25m conference centre for Blackpool's Winter Gardens

A new £25m conference centre at the historic Winter Gardens complex is to be discussed by councillors in Blackpool next week.

The purpose-designed venue on the former car park site in Leopold Grove would include a state of the art conference hall for 2,000 delegates and be directly linked to both the Empress Ballroom and the Opera House.

Councillor Simon Blackburn, leader of Blackpool Council, said: "Much of the detail is yet to be resolved - but behind the scenes we have been talking to agencies like Historic England to make sure the development of designs protects the historic significance of the building."

Started in 1878, Blackpool Winter Gardens became a venue that hosted annual conferences for the major political parties until 2007.

M6 closed twice over the weekend by serious crashes

The M6 near Carnforth was closed twice over the weekend by serious crashes on the southbound side near Junction 35.

On Saturday evening, a black Toyota Corolla crashed off the motorway and caught fire. The driver was critically injured and two passengers were also hurt.

On Sunday afternoon a woman was flown to hospital in Preston with what were described as life threatening head, back and neck injuries after another crash in the same area (pictured).

The M6 was closed for several hours with queues stretching back into Cumbria. Emergency repairs are taking place on the motorway.

Football: Blackpool FC 'not for sale' says owner Owen Oyston

Blackpool FC owner Owen Oyston has said the club is "not for sale" during a public meeting with members of its Supporters Trust.

He was heckled throughout with chants including "Oyston out" as he attempted to answer questions from the floor at the Blackpool Hilton hotel on Saturday. 

Blackpool were relegated for the third time in five seasons in May and relations between supporters and the owners deteriorated after the club's relegation from the Premier League after one season in 2010-11.

Fears Chorley A&E department may not reopen in August as planned

Campaigners fear the A&E department at Chorley Hospital, which closed its doors three months ago, will not reopen in August as planned.

Protect Chorley Hospital Against Cuts And Privatisation have been meeting with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust bosses who said there can be "no guarantees" but recruitment is under way.

The hospital was downgraded to an urgent care centre in April due to a doctor shortage after a pay cap on agency staff was imposed.

The trust said it needs more doctors to safely staff the department. It has been allocated seven trainee doctors who should be available in August but they will not know until then how many of them will actually be available for work.
